The murder of a prominent Iowa high school football coach has prompted state lawmakers to look at a measure aimed at improving communication between hospitals and police. State Senator Becky Schmitz says in the murder of Ed Thomas, the suspect had been released from a hospital without law enforcement being notified despite having an outstanding warrant. Schmitz says under the Ed Thomas Law, magistrates will be allowed to order a hospital to inform law enforcement before discharging a wanted individual.
