Schmitz: Rural Iowans Pay the Most for Healthcare

According to a new report by the Iowa Policy Project, up to 37 percent of families in rural Iowa buy their own health insurance on the non-group, private market. State Senator Becky Schmitz says this is the most expensive way to get health insurance. Schmitz states many work for struggling small businesses, and small businesses pay on average, 18 percent more for health insurance than larger firms. She feels any national health care reform must include a way to lessen the “health care penalty” paid by residents of Iowa’s rural and small town communities.
