Area lakes are expected to be ready for ice fishing in the coming weeks. Mark Flemming is a DNR Biologist at the Lake Rathbun Fishery. He says ice needs to be at least four inches thick before it’s safe to walk on. Flemming says selecting a location to ice fish, is a lot like picking out a spot during warmer weather. He recommends drilling holes near the shore, or in an area where you know there is submerged timber. Flemming says ice anglers need to remember that DNR has implemented a 25 fish limit for Crappies and Blue Gill. He says those are the most sought after species during ice fishing season.
