Iowa’s Tom Harkin was among the Democrats casting a yes vote in this week’s passage of the healthcare bill in the Senate. Harkin called it “one of the defining votes” in his Senate career. He says the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act takes a step towards reaching the goals of decreasing the number of uninsured Americans, increasing access to affordable care and making insurance companies more accountable. The measure will now have to be reconciled with a House version before it’s up for presidential approval.
