Iowans need to be mindful when disposing of unused medication. Brenda Sayre with the Southeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging says the common practice of flushing medication down the drain can saturate groundwater with chemicals. Sayre says there are environmentally friendly ways to dispose of medications. One way is to crush pills into kitty litter in a plastic bag and dispose of it in a landfill.
