Washington Supervisors Meet this Morning

Washington County Supervisors are considering a property tax abatement request at this morning’s (9/15) meeting. They’ll also take up two liquor license requests. One is for a five day temporary permit being sought by Pheasants Forever. The other comes from the Washington Golf and Country Club. They are hoping for a classification change. The meeting starts at 9:30 in the Washington County Courthouse

TDS Meets in Iowa this Year

Entrepreneurs from three Midwest states will meet in Fairfield next month for the annual Tri-State Development Summit. Visitors from Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa, will work to increase quality of life in their states and discuss public works projects such as road construction. The Tri-State Development Summit formed in the wake of the Flood of 93 as members worked on recovery efforts. This years summit will be October 12 in the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center.

Bows and Bullets holding Family Shoot Day

The Washington County 4-H’s Bows and Bullets Club is having it’s first ever Family Youth Shoot Day this Weekend. Shooting Instructor Joel Van Zante says they’ll have activities for kids of all ages. He says they hope to showcase what the organization is all about. an Zante says bows will be provided for archer shooting. He says kids over twelve who want to shoot firearms must bring their own gun. The event is this Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Highland Hideway near Riverside.

Gift of Grain

As farmer’s prepare for harvest, the 4-H program is reminding producers that they can contribute part of their crop. Iowa 4-H Foundation Associate Director Albert Gruenwald says they have been trying to identify new ways to raise funds in light of recent budget cuts. Hispanic Heritage Month at CJ

Today marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage month and the Columbus Junction Heritage Center will be celebrating in many ways. The center will honor Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America with special exhibits for four weeks. Nitza Castillo with the Community Development Center says Mexican Americans have contributed greatly to American culture and growth. She says this month will also help to educate many on the contributions of Hispanics to the U.S.

Treating ADHD with Meditation

A new treatment for ADHD may help reduce stress in children by up to fifty percent. Dr. Sarina Grosswald with George Washington University says a recent study shows meditation has a significant impact on a child’s focus and attention. She says meditation has a calming effect on participants. Grosswald says the study showed higher results than anticipated and also showed increased memory, organization, and attention. Grosswald held a seminar on mediation treatments in Fairfield.
